I’ve felt that way before sometimes too, but it seems clear to me now that I see these questions in the daylight outside of my head rather than the unseen darkness inside (it’s so much brighter out there!), that the answer to those questions is yes! We do need those stories, because those stories are meaningful to people. Creators might as well ask themselves: do we really need another story about growing up? do we really need another painting of nature’s wrath? do we really need another photo about the beauty of the human form?
Certain themes are timeless, and you can be part of that timelessness too. That doesn’t mean you needn’t bring anything new to your creative work, though, and sometimes finding that new thing to say can be hard. But read and watch what others are doing long enough and sooner or later you’ll see whatever it is they’re not doing, too! The only way you won’t be relevant is if you spend too much time locked up in the darkness of your own thoughts. It really is brighter outside, isn’t it?
